How the check works

  1. We query DNS

We ask the domain's DNS for its MX records, the list of servers that receive its email.

  2. We sort by priority

Senders try the lowest number first, so that's the order we show them in.

  3. We name the provider

We match each server to the company behind it, such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho, Proofpoint or Mimecast.

Questions

What is an MX record?

A DNS record that tells other servers where to deliver email for a domain. A domain can have several, each with a priority number.

Why does the provider matter?

Different providers answer verification checks differently. Security gateways like Proofpoint and Mimecast often hide whether a mailbox exists, which is why BounceOwl shows the provider on every result.

Does an MX record mean an address is real?

No. It only means the domain can receive mail. To know if a specific mailbox exists, use the free email checker.
